Overview

Bundi is a hidden gem of royal Rajasthan. It has historical monuments, a unique school of painting and numerous step wells carved out of stone in a distinct fashion, that make Bundi a unique destination. Bundi has medieval forts and palaces. The step wells, also called baoris, were an important source of water here but they now are known for their exquisite stone carvings.

Tourist attractions in Bundi

Bundi Palace

This is perhaps the most popular and visited attraction of Bundi surrounded by impressive natural beauty. The palace was raised during the rule of Rao Raja Ratan Singh. Enter into the palace through Hathi Pol (Elephant Gate) and take the stairs to reach the Ratan Daulat or Diwan-i-Am (Hall of Public Audience). You will also see Chhatra Mahal which was added to the palace in 1644. The Phool Mahal (1607) of the palace is extremely beautiful with splendid looking murals. Also visit Badal Mahal of the palace showcasing Chinese-inspired ceiling with flower patterns.

Raniji Ki Baori

This is the largest baori in Bundi where you can breathe in the city’s rich heritage. Visit here and explore its stone sculptures of elephants. This 46 m deep stepped well has multi-stories and it remains a great treat for every photographer.

Phool Sagar

Phool Sagar is an artificial lake so called because of the palace on its banks. The work on Phool Mahal or Flower Palace was started in 1945 but never completed. It is still in the incomplete state and the descendants of Maharaja Bahadur Singh who started building it, still live here. Permission needs to be obtained to see inside Phool Mahal. Apart from Phool Sagar, there are two other lakes in Bundi, namely, Jait Sagar and Nawal Sagar. Bundi also has numerous step-wells that are recognized for their beautiful lattice work.

Taragarh Fort

Taragarh Fort or the Star Fort, built in 1345 is the most well known landmark of Bundi. Taragarh has a massive gateway and it is reached by climbing a steep and winding road. Taragarh has 4.5 metre thick walls and strong fortifications. The climb up is absolutely worthwhile as it rewards the visitor with a beautiful view of the city lying below. Taragarh even has a legend associated with it of a hidden treasure. A leisurely afternoon seeking he treasure sounds like an excellent idea.

  • By Air: The Sanganer Airport of Jaipur is the nearest airport to Bundi at a distance of approximately 200 kilometers.
  • By Rail: Kota Railway Station is the nearest railway station to the city.
  • By Road: Bundi has a good network of roads and is easily accessible from Jaipur, Ajmer, Agra and New Delhi. You can avail state-run buses, private buses or taxi services to reach here.
