Overview

Pushkar Camel Fair or the Pushkar Cattle Fair is held annually in the holy town of Pushkar. A vast township springs up besides the lake in the Pushkar town. Pushkar itself is situated scenically amidst Aravali Hills and sand dunes.

About Pushkar

Pushkar has spiritual significance for Hindus. One of the rarest temples dedicated to Lord Brahma, the Creator of the Universe, is found here. An annual pilgrimage with a dip in the lake is held during the month of Kartik according to the lunar calendar. It is believed that this dip and the pilgrimage wash away all sins and grant salvation. The cattle fair also comes up at the same time. Lakhs of people from India and abroad visit the fair, making it a carnival like atmosphere.

Major Attractions

Apart from the spiritual aspect, the fair also is a big commercial opportunity for the rural people who bring their camels and other cattle here to trade. Consequently, a large number of stalls vending textiles, silver jewelry, household goods as well as crafts of Rajasthan and Rajasthani traditional food come up during this period. Camel races and other contests like the best decorated camel, bets mustache for men and tug-of-war are held. Folk music and folk dance performances add to the enjoyment of all visitors.
Pushkar is a mere eleven kilometers from Ajmer, the other holy town in Rajasthan. Pushkar is believed too have over 500n temples.
